The Fool is the first card of the Major Arcana; it is the unnumbered card.
The classic interpretation: Folly. Thoughtlessness. Extravagance. Lack of discipline. Spontaneity. Initiative. Enthusiasm. Beginning of an adventure.
Contemporary interpretations range from “infinite possibilities” to innocence, trust in one’s instincts, self-motivation, and the essence of creativity.
It is tempting, when giving a reading for oneself or for another, to read this card as some kind of new beginning: a move to a new place, a new house, a new job. And there are journeys of the mind, of the soul and of the creative spirit to consider. But where in the reading this card appears, and what other cards it is next to, make the interpretation of this card highly fluid. That is true to some extent for all the cards, but I think because of this card’s strong “new beginnings” character and the fact that it almost always represents the Querent (the person asking the “questions”, either you doing it for yourself or the person who has asked for the reading), that it is most true for the Fool.
