The High Priestess is the third card in the Major Arcana; it is numbered II.

Contemporary Interpretations: Psychic powers. Going within the darkness to find the way to the light. The Keeper of Arcane Mysteries and Penetrator of the Veil of Truth.
The High Priestess is a powerful indicator of a person who is the holder of the secrets and mysteries or forces that act in a hidden and unseen manner. Many times the High Priestess can be read as the person who is reading the Tarot cards, either you for yourself or some one who is reading for you. When this card appears, someone or something is about to reveal things that have been kept hidden from you, and they may be very unpleasant things that you’ve actually hidden from yourself. But while the knowledge may be painful and the journey dark and scary, your goal is to return with the Light of Truth. The Fool has her tools and now is shown the way, but there is still a long way to go.
